Valentine Hills named among top schools in state for positive behavior efforts

April 19, 2013 -- Valentine Hills is among 16 Minnesota schools identified as a state-wide leader for creating positive learning environments for students.

This week, the Minnesota Department of Education recognized Valentine Hills as a Sustaining Exemplar School. Using a program called Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS), Valentine Hills was identified as a leader in establishing a comprehensive set of practices to support positive behavior, improve school climate and increase student achievement. Sunnyside Elementary School (part of Mounds View Public Schools) was also recognized among the 16 schools in the state.

To establish a PBIS program, 80 percent of a school's teachers and staff need to agree to implement a more positive approach to discipline. Data from participating schools show clear evidence of the program's success, specifically in reduced number of behavioral incidents, fewer student suspensions and increased levels of student engagement.

"PBIS helps schools set clear expectations for students, teachers and families and to find new ways to address behavior issues," said Commissioner Brenda Cassellius.

In March, KSTP-Channel 5 produced a story on Valentine Hills and the school's PBIS efforts. Click below to watch.

School's PBIS system featured on KSTP channel 5

March 1, 2013 -- The number of discipline referrals has dropped by 60 percent at Valentine Hills since the school began implementing a PBIS system school-wide. This system, which stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports, plays a significant role -- along with efforts of pre-teaching expected behaviors through the use of our common CARES language, problem solving with students and involving students in the behavior process.

As a result of this progress, Valentine Hills was featured on KSTP, channel 5 in a story focused on Valentine Hills' implementation of PBIS and CARES language – representing Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control.
