Bring sketch book, pencil and planner to class..
Bring sketchbooks for Monday for final check. Extra credit portraits are due on Tuesday or Wednesday. Finishing woodcuts in class!

Fall 2011

“Living artistically means seeing and caring for the details of your world” – Andy Karr, Michael Wood

This is a quarter class, and will balance hands-on projects with art vocabulary, aesthetics and art history. A key theme for this class is enhancing observational skills.

Materials: Students should have planners, pencils, and 4b or 6b drawing pencil(s)

In this class I will emphasize:

· kindness

· mindful attention

· seeing v. observing

· alternative viewpoints

· everyone can learn/ improve

· making our best effort

· learning is exciting!

Activities/ projects

· Introductory activities and icebreaker

· Journal construction and cover design

· Art styles slide quiz

· Non-fiction reading

· Drawing foundation skills

· Portraits: traditional and modern (one matted)

· Woodcut printmaking unit

Students who need a digital camera can make arrangements with Mr. Iverson to use the art dept. camera.

Grades are based on: completion of projects, following directions, craftsmanship, and other criteria specific to each project. We may have some outside work for this class. Late work will be 20% off, beginning 1st quarter. This may increase as the year goes along.

This class meets for one quarter. Our focus is developing skills to help students organize and retain information in their studies, as well as developing the personal habits and attitudes which will lead to success in school, and in life.
 
In this class I will emphasize:

Materials: spiral notebook, planner, pen or pencil, index cards for vocab work

  • Daily journal entries -ongoing
  • Looking at our study habits
  • Listening skills
  • Note taking
  • Mind Mapping - biographies
  • Non-fiction reading skills
  • Memory skills
  • The Brain and stress: concepts and vocabulary

Homework- There will be some homework for this class, mainly studying for quizzes. Late work will be docked 20%, starting 1st quarter, and this may increase later in the year.
